Print your own CVC Bats and Vowel Cats for hands-on Halloween phonics play.
The set uses consonant bat wings and visually distinct vowel bat bodies to help children see the consonant–vowel–consonant structure of simple words. Children can arrange the pieces, sound out each word and swap one letter at a time to explore how changing a sound creates a new word.
Use the set to explore:
• Letter–sound recognition
• Oral segmenting and blending
• Building and reading CVC words
• Initial, medial and final sounds
• Short vowel sounds
• Word families and rhyming patterns
Your digital download includes the files required to print:
• 16 consonant bat wings: b, b, c, f, g, h, l, m, n, n, p, p, s, t, t and w
• Five vowel bat bodies: a, e, i, o and u
• 21 letter pieces in total
The repeated consonants allow children to build and compare a wider range of CVC words, while the vowel cats draw attention to the medial sound.
